The Backyard Ultra format, a deceptively simple, brutal endurance test, has taken the world by storm. But in Australia, Ultra Series is not just hosting races; it is pioneering the concept, setting world-class standards, and creating events that regularly feature among the biggest and most electric on the planet. From city hearts to isolated lakeside camps, Ultra Series events are where endurance legends are forged.

At its core, the Backyard Ultra demands that runners complete a 6.71km loop (or ‘yard’) on the hour, every hour, until only one person remains. It’s a race against the clock and, more importantly, a contest against the limitations of the self.

Ultra Series recognised the magnetic pull of this format and immediately sought to elevate it. Not content with outback settings alone, they pioneered the ‘Frontyard’ Ultra concept, pulling this ultimate test of toughness out of regional locations and placing it directly into the hearts of major metropolitan areas, with events like Herdy’s Frontyard Ultra (Perth), No Time To Die Frontyard Ultra (Adelaide), and MelbOURne Frontyard Ultra leading the charge.

This bold move – hosting in the central business districts (CBDs) and city parklands – transformed a niche endurance event into a spectacular, spectator-friendly phenomenon, allowing the intense energy of the race to be shared with the broader public. This innovation is a primary reason why Ultra Series continues to produce some of the biggest backyard ultra events in the world.

THE LAP 22 TUTU TRADITION

To celebrate the community and inject some fun into the deep hours of the race, Ultra Series created the world famous Tutu (22) lap. This is an Ultra Series signature tradition where runners, crew, and spectators embrace the chaos by wearing tutus for the entire 22nd lap. It’s a spontaneous and joyful display of community spirit, and anyone hitting the start line for Lap 22 is encouraged to join the fun, helping to power the athletes through the hour with mischief and colour.

The four anchor events of Ultra Series span the Australian continent, each offering a distinct challenge and setting for runners seeking to test their limits.

HERDY’S FRONTYARD ULTRA (WA)

Set around the stunning Herdsman Lake in Perth, Herdy’s massive size places it firmly among the largest global backyard events. It has repeatedly grown to become one of the world’s biggest backyard ultras by entrant count, renowned for its flat, fast course and the incredible festive environment it fosters. Running here means stepping onto one of the biggest, most electrifying ultra community stages on Earth, where the sheer scale of participation creates an unparalleled atmosphere of collective determination.

BIRDY’S BACKYARD ULTRA (WA)

Located at the beautiful Lakeside Camping at Lake Towerrinning, Birdy’s is the original World Series-affiliated backyard event for Ultra Series. With the entire venue closed to the public for the weekend, it transforms into a wonderful community village getaway. This creates a comfortable, secluded atmosphere perfect for focused, long distance efforts. As the course that nurtured some of the discipline’s greatest names, it holds a celebrated, untouchable place in ultra running history.

NO TIME TO DIE FRONTYARD ULTRA (SA)

Inspired by the success of Herdy’s, NTTD takes the ‘Frontyard’ concept to the next level, setting its high-energy arena right in the heart of Adelaide at Victoria Park. This event is synonymous with infectious energy and an amazing, supportive community. The atmosphere cultivates a shared sense of belonging and collective determination, transforming the event from a race into a massive adventure where individuals achieve more than they ever thought possible.

MELBOURNE FRONTYARD ULTRA (VIC)

The newest addition to the Ultra Series backyard lineup, the MelbOURne Frontyard Ultra spans the scenic trails of Melbourne’s iconic Studley Parklands. With its central location and electric atmosphere, the MelbOURne Frontyard Ultra delivers an intense and unforgettable experience right in the city’s green heart. The race feels like a high-energy rave that blends an intense physical challenge with a genuine festival atmosphere.

REMOTE RUNNER SUPPORT

Ultra Series is dedicated to making these backyard/frontyard events accessible to everyone, especially interstate and international travellers. To tackle the logistical headache of travelling with a complete support setup, Ultra Series provides crucial event gear for travellers: runners can request a full setup kit that includes a gazebo, table, chair, stretcher bed, and sleeping pod. This simple, all-inclusive support ensures athletes can focus purely on the challenge ahead, knowing their essential recovery base is taken care of.

THE SONIC COUNTDOWN

Adding to the unique atmosphere is the Ultra Series’ own special concept: a recurring song played every hour, five minutes before the start of each lap. This track, heard endlessly as a sonic countdown, quickly becomes a powerful, motivational (and utterly familiar) reminder. It signals to every runner, crew member, and spectator that the lap start is imminent, providing a consistent rhythm to the chaos of the endless loop and binding the community together in anticipation, hour after hour.

THE AMBASSADOR: PHIL GORE

Ultra Series’ commitment to excellence is perfectly embodied by its Backyard Ultra Ambassador, Phil Gore. As a record-breaker, global icon of the format, and current World Record Holder and Backyard Ultra World Champion, Phil Gore’s involvement is a constant source of inspiration, underscoring the calibre and dedication of these events. His presence, whether racing or supporting, transforms the atmosphere, inspiring both newcomers and seasoned veterans alike to challenge their absolute limits and redefine what’s possible in the loop.

The Ultra Series Backyard and Frontyard events are not defined solely by distance – they represent a celebration of human potential and community spirit. They are challenging, innovative, and stand as proof of Ultra Series’ commitment to delivering a truly world-class, unforgettable experience for every runner who dares to toe the start line, lap after lap (after lap).
