La Sportiva Prodigio 2 Review: A Cushioned Trail Shoe for Long Runs and Ultras

The Prodigio 2 gives you comfort from step one.

If you’re looking for a trail shoe that delivers comfort from the very first run, the La Sportiva Prodigio 2 makes a strong case. Built for long distances and everyday trail running for all runners, it combines plush cushioning, smooth energy return and reliable grip across mixed terrain.

THE PRODIGY RETURNS

There are shoes you have to earn your way into and shoes that just get you from step one. The La Sportiva Prodigio 2 is firmly the latter. No awkward adjustment period – just immediate, generous comfort that made me want to keep going long after I’d planned to stop.

XFlow Midsole: Cushioned Comfort with Energy Return

Sitting at 34mm in the heel and 28mm in the forefoot with a 6mm drop, the La Sportiva Prodigio 2 lives in that well-judged middle ground between protective and purposeful. La Sportiva have run their nitrogen-injected XFlow foam through both the midsole and the footbed, and the effect is a ride that feels cushioned without being disconnected from the trail beneath you. There’s genuine softness here (noticeable softness, actually) but it doesn’t come at the cost of responsiveness. The energy return keeps things feeling lively, which matters a lot when the kilometres start stacking up.

Performance on the Trail: Long Runs, Ultras and Daily Training

The 4mm XFlow footbed, constructed from 100% recycled TPU supercritical foam, layers neatly on top of all that midsole work and adds a plushness that you feel on longer efforts. Legs that might otherwise be grumbling tend to stay quieter in this shoe, and that’s not a small thing.

What strikes me most about the Prodigio 2 is how genuinely broad its appeal is. Runners new to trails or ultras will find it forgiving and confidence-inspiring from the outset. Those deep into endurance racing or heavy training blocks will appreciate the leg preservation it quietly delivers, run after run. It doesn’t ask much of you, which somehow makes it easier to ask a lot of it in return.

FriXion Red Outsole: Grip and Traction on Mixed Terrain

The dual-density FriXion Red outsole keeps things honest underfoot, too. The 4mm lugs grip well across the terrain I covered – compacted dirt, fire road, pea gravel, dry grass – and the dual-compound construction is genuinely clever: a harder-wearing rubber at the heel where impact and abrasion are greatest, and a stickier compound through the mid and forefoot where traction is king. Basically, on firm as well as dry surfaces, I felt secure throughout. Wetter, looser, or highly technical ground will push the limits of what this outsole wants to do, but for the bulk of everyday trail running it performs with incredible reliability.

Upper and Fit: Breathability, Lockdown and Foot Shape

Up top, the 3D mesh upper breathes well – a real asset on the kind of steep, sustained climbing where heat builds fast. The ergonomic wrapping system holds the foot without clamping it, and there’s no unwanted movement through the midfoot or heel – this happens to me more often than not, and I was taken aback when there was no slipping or sliding. The recycled 3D fabric lining is soft against skin, and the gusseted tongue does a tidy job of keeping grit and debit outside where it belongs. Forefoot room is generous enough for natural splay as fatigue sets in, which your toes will thank you for.

Lacing is classic and unfussy – cinches down easily, holds tension well, and didn’t need revisiting mid-run. Fit runs true to size, and there are some phenomenal colour schemes to choose from in the Women’s (White/Hibiscus, Mineral Red/Azalea, Onyx/Adriatic, Limestone/Azalea) and the Men’s (Onyx/Mountain Red, Lake/Night Sky, Hurricane/Chalk, Yellow/Black).
