Icebreaker RealFleece 960: The Ultimate Post-Run Layer?

Pulling on the Icebreaker Merino Blend 960 RealFleece High Pile Long Sleeve Zip Jacket for the first time is one of those unexpectedly lovely moments.

It’s warm, extraordinarily soft, and it has that special quality that only merino delivers – the sense that the fabric is actively doing something for you, not just sitting on your body.

Icebreaker has been making merino wool performance apparel since 1995, built on the belief that natural fibres outperform synthetics for comfort, odour resistance, and temperature regulation. Three decades later, that belief is well-validated, and the RealFleece 960 is one of the best things the brand has produced.

Icebreaker sent me the men’s version to trial, and given I’m wearing it in a woman’s body, the fit is naturally more relaxed and loose, which is my preference. If anything, it added to the cosy, wrap-around warmth of it. After a trail run, when the sweat starts to cool and the chill factor sets in fast, this jacket has become the thing I pull out of my bag before I’ve even caught my breath.

It’s that instant warmth that merino does so well, regulating temperature rather than just trapping heat, and it delivers it without any of the bulk or weight you’d expect from something this cosy.

The construction is clever. The face of the jacket is 100% merino wool, responsible for that beautiful tactile softness that makes you want to keep touching it. It’s so luscious and stunning, I can’t get my palms off it, which sounds dramatic until you put it on and understand where I’m coming from. Merino’s natural structure creates millions of tiny air pockets that trap warmth without weight, while its inherent moisture-wicking properties pull sweat away from the skin rather than holding it against you.

It’s also naturally odour-resistant; something that truly matters for a jacket that will live in your kit bag and come out repeatedly after hard efforts.

The back panels use Lyocell, which adds breathability and moisture management exactly where you need it most after exertion. The material is a sustainably sourced wood-based fibre with a smooth surface structure that reduces friction and dries faster than cotton. A smart pairing with the merino face fabric makes the jacket work harder across a wider range of conditions.

The high pile fleece texture gives it a visual warmth that matches how it actually feels, and the full-length zip with chin guard means you can regulate temperature easily without irritation at the neck.

The zippered hand pockets are a practical addition, deep enough to be useful, and the overall aesthetic is clean enough to take you from trailhead to coffee shop without a second thought.

Icebreaker has a strong commitment to sustainability that runs through everything they make. The merino used in this jacket is sourced from farms that meet the ZQ Merino standard, an independent certification covering animal welfare, environmental sustainability and fibre quality.

For trail runners who feel the cold after long efforts, this jacket earns its place. But its versatility stretches well beyond the trailhead, equally at home on a casual winter hike or simply worn as an everyday piece when the temperature drops.

Thoroughly and warmly recommended, and comes in an undyed, natural colour or jet heather/black for men, and an undyed, natural colour and summit dk hthr/blush for women.
