Head Coach: trail running mind games

It’s cliché enough to warrant inclusion in those ‘Sh#! Ultra Runners Say’ videos doing the YouTube rounds: “You’re gonna hurt after 50-kays no matter what. After that, it’s all in your head.” Even on shorter trail dashes, you’re bound to hit a wall or two. So how do you push through the brain barrier? Can you condition your mind into faster times and longer distances? Yes you can, says Trail Run Mag’s resident sport psychology guru, Greg Layton … ”…

Not heroic, just stupid

EDITORIAL (AU) FROM THE LATEST TRAIL RUN MAG Ed4, now live and downloadable online HERE. “I can run faster than you, so that means I will get there quicker. And I have 100 of energy (sic), so I just know I can run the whole way, Dad! Pleeeease let me come.” Ah, the logic of children. So beautiful, so boundless. My daughter – all of four years old and more than “100 of energy”, whatever that wonderful sounding unit of…

Eat My Shorts

Not really. No one would ever want to eat my shorts. There is something about the interaction of nylon and sweat that produces an odour that I like to describe as rich and fragrant, although my wife prefers to use a different adjective. My feeling is that if you were a short-eater, you would be the kind of gourmand who enjoys those aged soft and stinky goat cheeses. Or the tins of fermented herrings that Swedes love eating but have…

Weather to run Taranaki: Anna Frost blogs

UPDATE: The weekend’s NZ Team Salomon Taranaki assault and its likelihood of success swings like a yo-yo with weather predictions changing every six hours with new updates. If you’re watching Metservice then you’re going to get wet from Friday-Sunday. Booooooo. Metvuw only has you getting wet on Friday so I’m running with Metvuw… Friday, it seems, is pretty wet by all ‘expert’ accounts, so no summits, lots of coffee. Yes, that’s legitimate nutritional preparation. Saturday/Sunday are looking good for everyone…

Two Bays, The Irish and a dose of BHV

It was only the week before the Two Bays Trail Run in a high-level Trail Run Magazine editorial meeting (held on the 25th floor of our penthouse office, complete with indoor trail running track), that the decision was made for me to run the race. From my memory the conversation went a little something like this: ‘Rosco, we need someone to run the Two Bays Trail Run and report back, and since you are the fastest, the best-looking and…

Trail Run Mag hardcopy on sale

I WENT BAREFOOT ON TRAIL the other day. It was for a photoshoot for the upcoming Edition #3 of Trail Run Mag (what?! you haven’t read number #2 yet? Well get on it!). Anyway, the idea was to get an image for a story by Nick White about turning up to a trail event sans shoes (he forgot them). I thought a cracking shot of some mud between the toes might suffice. Conceptually, it didn’t work. Or maybe my photography…
