PURE Sports Nutrition Energy Gels: Tasty & Effective Fuel

Founded in 2012 by Simon and Marewa Kraack, a brother-sister duo with a passion for healthy living and sports, PURE Sports Nutrition was born with the idea of no compromises on quality or ingredients.

There is such a variety of flavours when it comes to PURE Sports Nutrition’s Energy Gels – Pineapple, Cola + Caffeine, Raspberry + Caffeine, Mango, Lemon Lime, Apple Cinnamon, and Orange just to name a few. There are even two brand new flavours available as well – Peach, and Cherry + Caffeine.

I tried all six flavours that were delivered to my door (Lemon Lime, Raspberries, Apple Cinnamon, Orange Juice and Mango Juice). I’ve tried many different gels over the years with the vast majority relegated to the ‘never to be ingested again’ box due to a revolting, gluggy-type consistency (a throwback to being force fed oysters, and I hate oysters); an unpleasant aftertaste or too insipid and I would have been better off chucking down some lolly snakes.

The PURE Sports Nutrition Energy Gels were none of the above – the consistency was definitely un-gluggy and more towards the end of runny, so I learnt quickly to hold the sachet up and pour the liquid into my mouth. No unpleasant aftertaste at all and definitely ‘full bodied flavour’ and I could discern the differences in each of the flavours.

The only thing I found that is of 100% personal preference is that the gels were quite sweet for me. I don’t have much of a sweet tooth, so anything sweet feels as if it’s really, really, very sweet whereas other folk may not experience this. I gave one of the sachets to a friend running his first full marathon and he said it was ‘delicious’ and not too sweet for him at all.

Did any of the gels make me run faster? Sadly not, as I am a tortoise runner and the only time I have ever run fast in my life was when I was chased by a bull elephant in Kenya and when I saw snakes while running the 50kms for Pemberton Fest.

As a psychologist, I am also well aware of the placebo effect – however, I did notice more energy after the gels, so the gels worked!

And for those who like the numbers, each gel sachet contains 50g of product, 30mg of caffeine, 25mg of carbohydrates, and is vegan, dairy and gluten free.

I would certainly take the PURE Sports Nutrition Energy Gels on runs again in the future!
